In my preparations to run for the Spring Fever Chase 10K, I assembled a play list to run to. Being the nerd I am, I created a spreadsheet to calculate total time and very purposefully organized my music. I start the list with a couple of "pace setters" to help me get my pace right while getting me excited to run. The middle is filled with a mix of fun and/or fast songs to keep me going. The bottom of the list is stacked with "power songs" to help me push the last mile and a half or so. The last song, naturally, is the cool down. Since I know everyone is dying to know what's on the list, I give it to you now in all it's glory.

So, my goal is to finish somewhere between "Cousins" and "The Distance". If I start hearing the last songs, I need to make a push to the finish!

I guess I'm admitting to liking a Justin Timberlake song. That's okay. I'm not ashamed.

My Top 5 Favorite Albums of All Time

Whenever I get on the subject of music in conversation, I am often asked what my favorite albums are...

Whenever I get on the subject of music in conversation, I am often asked what my favorite albums are. For a long time I wasn't sure. I had never really sat down and thought about it. I've heard hundreds of albums. How do I pick out my favorites? Well, I sat down and really thought it through. It was actually not as hard as I thought it would be. So, if you care, here it is. My list of my top five favorite albums of all time (so far).

(5) Jimmy Eat World - Clarity (1999, Capitol Records)
Ah, Clarity. This album finds its way on many a "Top Albums of All Time" list. Honestly, I can't really explain why. Clarity is not that musically complex. The lyrics are great, but they won't blow your mind. Yet, it is beautiful. It passes through your ears and right down into your soul. I find myself coming back to this album over and over again, and I never get tired of it. Clarity is the only release Jimmy Eat World had with Capitol Records, and were dropped by Capitol due to the album selling so poorly. I'm sure Capitol were kicking themselves when Jimmy Eat World released Bleed American (the follow up to Clarity) and they broke through as a major group, selling over a million copies. Actually, Capitol is probably not too upset. As Jimmy Eat World's fan base grew, many new listeners discovered Clarity. It is the collective favorite among Jimmy Eat World fans, and the band recently released a live performance of the album in its entirety.
Favorite Track: For Me This Is Heaven

(4) Mmhmm - Relient K (2004, Capitol Records)
Mmhmm was Relient K's first release on a major label. I've been a huge Relient K fan from the beginning, back when I watched them put on a great, high energy show in the rain at Atlanta Fest 2001 to a crowd of about forty people. These days they sell out the Nokia Theater. They've come a long way, and this album was their breakout into the mainstream. The singles "Be My Escape" and "Who I am Hates who I've Been" are what most know from this album, but the album as a whole is absolutely fantastic. This is the album where Relient K began to really mature musically and lyrically. They made their sound bigger, incorporating piano into their songs and moving away from their strictly pop-punk sound. Their lyrics moved away from silly things like Chapstik, staples, and mood rings to incredibly deep and though-provoking lyrics on songs like "Let it All Out", "More Than Useless", and "When I Go Down". They didn't completely move away from their silly roots (note the album title), and put happy, poppy songs like "High of 75" and "My Girl's Ex-boyfriend" on the album. The album is a truly engaging experience from beginning to end, and I still listen to it often. Relient K is still making great music, but so far have not been able to top Mmhmm. They are currently in the studio working on their sixth studio album, which should be out soon.
Favorite Track: Which to Bury, Us or the Hatchet?

(3) The Everglow - Mae (2005, Tooth and Nail Records)
The greatness that is The Everglow is hard to fully explain to someone who has not experienced it. Probably because that is just what it is: an experience. The prologue tells you that if you are only listening to the album, you are only getting half of the experience. When you sit down with the booklet and follow along, you get a cohesive story that is told in lyrics and album artwork, as well as music. The songs even flow from one into the other without pause, yet they each still have the capacity of standing on their own as singles out of context. The Everglow is like looking at a beautiful, captivating piece of art that catches your eye every time you pass it. You pick up something new in each listen, and I still enjoy it after all these years. Mae is still making great music these days, but only on their own. They have shrunk from a five-piece to a three-piece, so their sound isn't as "full" as it once was, but it is still great stuff. They are currently releasing one song a month independently on their website, with each profited dollar going to a humanitarian project. I highly recommend checking it out at WhatIsMae.com.
Favorite Track: Someone Else's Arms

(2) The End is Not the End - House of Heroes (2008, Gotee Records)
I feel very conflicted about putting this album in the number two spot. It is so much newer, I haven't really been able to give it the test of time. However, at this point I have had the album for almost a year, and I still listen to it at least once a week. I have been a House of Heroes fan for a few years, so I was excited when this album was announced. They leaked a few songs onto the Internet, and I was blown away by what I heard. The album was to be released in April 2008, and I was ready for it. Then it was delayed...and delayed...and delayed. When I finally got my hands on it at the end of September 2008, I was not disappointed. The sound on this album is so full and polished. There are several single-worthy songs, and from beginning to end the album is a wonderful experience. It starts off with the pop-rock "If", ventures into epic rock songs like "In the Valley of the Dying Sun", the beautiful ballad "By Your Side", and ends in an absolutely massive finish in "Field of Daggers". For me, this is one album that really has everything in place. The music, the lyrics, the vocals, the production, and the energy are all perfection. House of Heroes have yet to really burst out onto the mainstream, but if they continue to make music like this, I think they will. They are currently touring to promote the album, and will probably start working on a new album sometime next year.
Favorite Track: Code Name: Raven

(1) Live: Proof that the Youth are Revolting - Five Iron Frenzy (1999, 5 Minute Walk Records)
Five Iron Frenzy is my favorite band of all time. This album is the reason why. This is the album that really made me fall in love with music, and understand what it could be and where it could go. Music can be serious, it can be funny. The musician doesn't have to stand on the stage and merely give a performance. They can interact with the crowd. The crowd can energize and come alive. For that moment, hundreds, even thousands are joined for a common purpose: TO ROCK OUT. I was already a fan of Five Iron Frenzy before this album came along, but I strongly recommend this album as the starting point if you are interested in checking them out. Not only is this album a collection of their "greatest hits" of sorts, but it also really gives you a good idea about Five Iron Frenzy's energy, spirit, and message. The record is a compilation of live performances from eleven shows throughout 1998 and 1999. The band handed out pieces of paper at each show recorded, where concert attenders could register as "backup singers". The album booklet folds out into a poster, and on one side are printed the names of about 7000 "backup singers". There is even a hidden track that contains clips from the eleven shows of the band messing up, including playing out of key and one half of the band starting one song and the other half starting another. That's what Five Iron Frenzy was about. Love your music, but never take yourself too seriously, and always show your fans the love. Five Iron Frenzy broke up in 2003, and I was able to see them on their farewell tour (The "Winners Never Quit" Tour - see what I mean about not taking yourself seriously?). It was one of the greatest nights of my life, and I will miss hearing new music from Five Iron Frenzy. This album will always be my favorite, it holds many happy memories for me. I don't believe there is any way it could ever be knocked from the number one spot.
Favorite Track: Every New Day

I recently discovered a nifty, simple little Windows tool for writers of all sorts. It is called Dark Room, inspired by the Mac program Write Room. All it really does is give you a full screen word processor with minimal buttons. I heard about it while listening to one of the many podcasts I've subscribed to, and thought I would give it a try.

I find it particularly useful because it removes distractions. While running Dark Room, that is all you see. No e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, notification windows, and so on. Just a screen of what you currently working on. Some people have no problem multi-tasking, but I am easily distracted. So, this works really well for me. I can open up a writing project, and go to work with blinders on. It's like turning your computer into a typewriter. A typewriter with cut and paste.

I do have a few complaints. First of all, no spell check. I am terrible at spelling, and have become extremely reliant on spell check. Perhaps this will help force me to improve my spelling...nah. I'll just cut and paste it into a word processor that has spell check. Maybe future versions of Dark Room will integrate a spell checker. Second, the lack of buttons is a both a blessing and a curse. You have to learn some keyboard commands to do all commands besides scrolling, but they are pretty straight forward. Finally, the default color scheme is terminal style. Black screen with green text. As a programmer, I can appreciate that, but normal users will find it off-putting. I still changed it to white background with black text myself (using keyboard commands!). I look at enough terminal screens during the day.

I can't complain too much, since it is free. For me, the positives outweigh the negatives, so I will be sticking with this program for now.

You can download the program at:

http://they.misled.us/dark-room

System requirements and keyboard-shortcuts are on the bottom of the page.

A couple of weeks ago I was able to attend a preview showing of 'A Nice Family Gathering', the latest play being performed at Theatre 98. I was planning to go see the show, so when I was invited to see it for free, I eagerly accepted. All I knew about the show was from the synopsis on the Theatre 98 website:

A NICE FAMILY GATHERING is a story about a man who loved his wife so much, he almost told her. It's Thanksgiving Day and the first family gathering at the Lundeen household since the Patriarch died. At the gathering, Dad comes back as a ghost with a mission; to tell his wife he loved her, something he neglected to tell her while he was alive. After all, they were only married for 41 years. Unfortunately, she can't hear or see him. The trouble begins when Mom invites a date for dinner.

But there is much more to it than that. Each member of the family has their personality defects, and it's hard not to see yourself or someone you are related to in each of them. Each member of the cast fleshed out each character wonderfully, and I was very moved from start to finish. The play will make you laugh as the family interacts in the way that all familes do: dysfunctionally. However, there were times when tears filled my eyes as layers peeled back and we discover that deep down they love each other no matter what. There were a few little things that needed to be fixed and fine tuned, but I'm sure they will have it looking and flowing perfectly by opening night.

The play has some mature themes, so its not for the kiddies. Teens should be able to handle the subject matter, though. It's a wonderful play to take all your loved ones to, and maybe you will come out realizing how much you care for each other and how (comparatively) "normal" your family is.

Show times are July 10th, 11th, 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th at 8:00pm and July 12th and 19th at 2:30pm. Tickets are available at the Theatre 98 box office (251-928-4366).

This Enchanted April

Greetings, everyone. Over the next few weeks, I will seemingly dissapear from the face of the Earth. Fear not, everything is fine and dandy. I will just be busy rehearsing for Enchanted April, a play I got a part in at Theatre 98 in Fairhope. So, I will be there pretty much every night until after the show is over the first week of May.

Here is the info from the Theatre 98 Website:

Enchanted April

by Matthew Barber

Directed by Anita Havel

April 24,25,26,29,30, May 1,2,3. Showtimes are 8:00 pm, and Sunday's are at 2:30 pm.

In this charming romantic comedy, two frustrated London housewives decide to rent a villa in Italy for a holiday away from their bleak marriages. They recruit two very different English women to share the cost. There, among the wisteria blossoms and in the Mediterranean sunshine, all four bloom again, rediscovering themselves in ways that they--and we--could never have expected.

I will be playing the part of Antony Wilding, the owner of the villa. Don't let the phrase "charming romantic comedy" sway you. It's a pretty fun play, and great for a date night. Come out and see me sport a British accent, and possibly a pair of knickerbockers.

I am a big fan of BBQ pulled pork. However, I lack the tools to make it myself at home. Perhaps someday I will own a smoker, but in the meantime, I have found a suitible alternative. I wanted to make some pulled pork one day, and I decided to see if there were any recipes online for crock-pot pulled pork. There are several. After weeding through them all, I found one that looked simple and promising. I've used the recipe six times now, and I have modified it stlightly with each attempt. The result, I feel, is some very fine crock-pot pulled pork.

Here's what you need:

4-5lb pork shoulder

2 onions

2 liter bottle of ginger ale

1 big bottle of your favorite BBQ suace

Your favorite seasoning

First, peel one of the onions and slice it like you are going to make onion rings, but keep the rings intact. You should have about six flat, round slices of onion. Line the bottom of the crock-pot with the onion slices. Next, rub your pork shoulder with a generous amount of your favorite pork seasoning. I use a smokey mequite blend that I am fond of. Place the pork shoulder on top of the onion slices. Next, peel and slice the second onion into onion rings (seperate them into rings this time). Place the onion rings on the top and sides of the pork shoulder. Finally, fill the crock-pot with ginger ale until the pork shoulder is about 3/4 covered. For best results, let set overnight covered in the refrigerator.

Now it's time to cook. Cook the pork shoulder in the crock-pot on low for 7 hours. After that is done, remove the pork shoulder from the crock-pot and drain the liquid from the crock-pot. "Pull" the pork (stick two forks in the meat and pull in opposite directions), and put it back into the crock-pot. Stir in the BBQ sauce until the meat is covered to your liking. Cook the pulled pork in the crock pot on high for 1 hour, stirring every 15 minutes.

You're done! Serve it up on a bun or however you like it!
Makes about 12 servings

From DVD to iPod

I recently became the proud owner of an iPod Touch. I own several show seasons and movies on DVD t...

I recently became the proud owner of an iPod Touch. I own several show seasons and movies on DVD that I wanted to watch on my iPod. Thanks to all of the copyright protection placed on DVDs, getting the video from the disc to your computer in a format that the iPod can play is a somewhat difficult process. Difficult, yes. Impossible, no. It can all be done in a simple three-step process. I will go ahead and make this disclaimer: Only use this process on DVDs that you OWN. Don't steal video. If you appreciate and enjoy a tv show/movie, buy it and support it. That's the way more quality stuff gets made. OK, now that that is out of the way, lets get down to business.

What you need:

A video-capable iPod or iPhone

A computer with a DVD drive

iTunes

Lost of free hard drive space

Programs to rip and convert video (both free, detailed below)

Step 1: Get the Video from the Disc to the Computer
I have found a nifty little program that does this very effectively. It is called DVD Shrink. You will have to use Google to find and download this program. It is constantly moved around to different places because what it does it a bit...against the rules. So, download and install that. Pop in your DVD, and start DVD Shrink. Click "Open Disk", select the drive your DVD is in, and click "OK". After it is done doing it's thing, click the "Re-author" button. This will give you a list of titles on the disk. Select the main movie title or episode you want to backup and drag it into the "DVD Structure" window. Click the "Backup!" button, pick where you want to create the file, and click "OK". The program will create a copyright-free iso file, and you are now ready for step 2.

Step 2: Convert the Video File to an iPod Friendly Format
To do this, you can use the fantastically handy program Handbrake. Download and install the program, then open it up. Click on "Source" and then "Video File". Browse and select the iso file you just created. Under "Destination", browse and select where you want to save the file and what you want to name it (set the file type to mp4 or m4v). In the list in the right-hand column, click "iPod" or "iPhone and iPod Touch", depending on what you are converting for. Finally, click "Start" and go find something else to do, cause this takes a LONG time. Unless you have a really fast computer, the it just takes a (lowercase) long time. You can also queue up a list of files to convert if you want. Once your files are converted, it's time for step 3.

Step 3: Import the Files into iTunes
In iTunes, select "File"->"Add File to Library" (for a single file) or "Add Folder to Library" (for multiple files). This will load any video files you import into the "Movies" section by default. So, go there and right click on the video and select "Get Info". Here you can put in all the information about the video. You can title it, set other information, and even classify it under the "options" tab as a "Movie", "TV Show", or "Music Video". Now your videos are finally ready to head to your iPod. Plug it in and sych it up! Finally!

NOTE
Q: Can't I just use Handbrake to convert the video directly from the DVD and skip step 1?
A: Yes, yes you can. IF the DVD is NOT copy-protected.

I hope that helps some people out. Feel free to let me know about other, easier ways to do this. I am sure that there is a program somewhere that does this all in one place.

Anti-Meridian: The End of an Epic Space Rock Trilogy

"The music is still around, it's just underground" I got quite a bit of music for Ch...

"The music is still around, it's just underground"

I got quite a bit of music for Christmas this year, and I could have written about Narrow Stairs, The Red Album, or Folie a Deux (yes, I shamefully admit that I like Fall out Boy). However, there are plenty of reviews out there on the internet for those albums. How about one you have probably never heard of? My current "can't stop listening to" album is the newest from Brave Saint Saturn, Anti-Meridian.

Let me start with a little back information about Brave Saint Saturn (BS2). BS2 is an "astro-rock" side project of half the members of the now defunct ska band Five Iron Frenzy. The members are:
Reese Roper - vocals, guitar, keys
Dennis Culp - vocals, guitar
Keith Horieg - Bass
Andrew Verdecchio - Drums

The Brave Saint Saturn trilogy is comprised of three concept albums that tell the story of the crew of the Saturn 5 mission. Each album is comprised of songs that may or may not have anything to do with the story, with sound bytes iterspersed throughout the albums that give information about the story. Where the songs and sound bytes fall short, the album booklet fills in the details. The albums are:

So Far From Home (2000)
The Saturn 5 crew leaves Earth for their mission to Saturn to do research. The songs on this album are mostly about isolation and loneliness, with a focus on hope in darkness.

The Light of Things Hoped For (2003)
The Saturn 5 crew arrives at Saturn and begins their mission. An explosion on the space craft knocks them off course and puts them into a geosynchronous orbit around Titan, one of Saturn's moons. They lose communication with Earth, and ground control assumes they died in the explosion. Songs on this album are significantly darker, as they reflect the theme of total isolation while the crew remains plunged in the complete darkness of Titan's shadow.

Anti-Meridian (2008)
Now, on to Anti-Meridian. At the end of "The Light of Things Hoped For", the crew emerges from the shadow of Titan to see the sunlight for the first time in three years and regains communication with Earth. We finally learn in this album how they achieved that, make their way home, and the incredible discovery they made on their mission. I'll refrain from going into the story, in case anyone out there is interested in the new album and doesn't want the story spoiled.

This album is definitely the most story-heavy of the three. I suppose that is either becuase they wanted to make sure they tied up all the loose ends, or this is the result of the five years they spent working on this album (or both). They do an excellent job of wrapping up the story, and the production shines on this album. This album was self-produced and self-distributed by Roper's self-created label, Department of Biophysics. Roper said in an interview that one of the reasons the album took so long is because of his obsession with making the album perfect. His struggle with this is chronicled in the song "Fortress of Solitude", a Superman-imagery heavy song about coming to grips with imperfection.

The album opens with an appropriate cover of ELO's "Here is the News", the high-energy "Mercenary", and the somber and introspective "Starling". Culp then takes over the vocals with the spunky "Underground", a song about finding pure music craftsmanship amongst the over-production and choreography. Reese follows that up with the wonderfully bizarre "When You Burn too Fast", complete with maniacal laughter, haunting chanting, and a glockenspiel. I love any song that thinks outside of the box and still manages to be good music.

A few other songs that are stand outs for me are the aforementioned "Fortress of Solitude", the dark and sarcastic "Blessed are the Land Mines", and the beautiful and powerful "These Frail Hands" and "Invictus" that the album closes with. "Hero's Homecoming" and "Fields of the Fallen" fit in with the story line beautifully, and still manage to be great songs that stand on their own. So, that only leaves "Through Depths of Twilight" and "Begin Again" ("Ammodramus" and "Aegolius" are spoken word tracks that tell the story), which are wonderful songs that I can't think of anything bad to say about, other than they haven't pulled me in as quickly as some of the other songs. This may change with a few more listens.

With all this gushing of how wonderful it is, I fell like I should say something negative about the album. First, it was not worth the wait. FINALLY having the album is great, but five years is way too long. I had almost forgotten about BS2 when I heard about this album coming out. Luckilly, the album is still great. So, it was ALMOST worth the wait. I guess it could be worse, right Guns n' Roses fans? Also, the album feels a little too long. I almost hate to complain, because I am glad to have more BS2, but it still feels a about one or two songs too long. The album even feels like it ends twice with "These Frail Hands" and "Invictus", both being equally good closing songs. But, hey, it worked for Return of the King, right?

All that said, I will definitely recommend the album. I recommend starting with the first album and working your way through the whole trilogy, but this one is a fine place to start as well. If you enjoy catchy if untraditional rock and are not offended by a sometimes overtly Christian message in your music, then this album is definitely one to check out.

3 Steps to Making an iPhone/iPod Touch Friendly Web Page

As web capable mobile devices become more and more popular, the desire for "mobile device frie...

As web capable mobile devices become more and more popular, the desire for "mobile device friendly" web sites increases. The current winner of the popularity contest is the Apple iPhone. So, just like most websites are built with Internet Explorer in mind (until Firefox forced this to change, thank God), "mobile device friendly" web pages are synonymous with "iPhone friendly" web pages. I was recently faced with the challenge of putting together a "mobile version" of the company website, so I went out onto the net to find out how to do it. To my surprise, I had some trouble finding useful information. For the most part, the websites I found pointed me to other websites as examples. After digging through source code and lots of trial and error, I found that there are three common factors in all of the examples. I'm going to explain each of these in the hopes that others can benefit from my findings. Let's begin, shall we?

1 - The iPhone's screen is 320x480
First, you need to keep in mind the resolution of the screen you are displaying to. Vertical scrolling is fine, but horizontal scrolling is NOT. A iPhone user will typically enter a webpage via profile mode, wich means that the max page width you can have is 320 pixles. The only things you really have to worry about here are images and non-wrapping text. Images should be no wider than 310 pixles, and text should always wrap. This will keep your page tight, and help make sure you take advantage of the screen real estate as best as possible. You also need to keep in mind that the iPhone can be turned to landscape mode, changing the width from 320 to 480. So, make sure that any elements you have in the page adjust with the screen. You can do this with div tags or a table with width=100%.

2 - You have to tell the iPhone your page is "iPhone Friendly"
There is a special meta tag that lets the iPhone know how to render your page. Without it, the iPhone will treat it like a normal page, making all the work you did to make sure the page looks good at 320 pixles all for naught. The meta tag is:

<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width; initial-scale=1.0; maximum-scale=1.0; user-scalable=0;"              />

The "viewport" meta tag has four components:

Width: You can define the width here (such as 320), or set it to device-width wich will adjust the page to the default width of the device using it. The second option is the best, as it will adjust to the best setting for all mobile devices, and perhaps even future iPhones that will no doubt have larger screens

Initial-scale: We made this page 320 pixles wide, right? Heck yes we want a 1:1 scale!

Maximum-scale: *see note above*

User-scaleable: If you have optomized the page to look its absolute best at a 1:1 scale, then there is no need to allow the user to rescale the page. Set this to 0.

3 - Hide that annoying address bar
The iPhone has extremely limited screen real estate, so it automatically hides the address bar after it loads a page, right? NOPE! You have to tell it to hide the adress bar. The iPhone's address bar takes up a whopping 320x60 pixles, and when you are on a 320x480 screen, that's a lot. Luckily, you can make that pesky address bar disappear with one line of code in the html body tag:

<body onload="setTimeout(function() { window.scrollTo(0, 1) }, 100);">
~content~
</body>

There, now you have reclaimed those 60 pixles. Take that address bar!

And there you have it. The three essential elements to make your webpage "iPhone Friendly". Here are a few other non-essintal points:

Make your images small. You want your page to load quickly and you don't want horizontal scrolling, remember?

Make your text large. Don't go crazy, but since we are setting the page to be non-user-scaleable, they need to be able to read it and easily click on links with their fingers.

Add some spiffy page animations to make your website emulate iPhone apps. Here is some javascript code that will make page transitions slide left and right. I have not utilized this code yet, but it looks really good.

I hope this helps and let me know if you find any other tips or tricks.
